Social Networking Dilemma

Lynn Lately I've attempted to connect with as many social networking sites as possible. I signed up for several, including Twitter, which I have yet to post even one sentence.
But Melody Watson started a conversation about social networking on her website yesterday, or the day before. She is the most socially in-touch person I know, meaning she knows her stuff when it comes to social networking. Whereas, it is all I can do to blog and return e-mails while maintaining my regularly scheduled assignments, Melody has developed a gazillion followers by "tuning in" to various forms of communication.
Such knowledge has become increasingly valuable for writers, as most daily newspapers throughout the United States have discontinued publishing book reviews. This has everything to do with the industry's ailing advertising sales and decreasing subscribers, since the internet has become the first place people go for news. Therefore, the most valuable places for authors to announce new books is the internet. Therefore, social networking has become an invaluable resource for writers.
The latest presidential election proved the effectiveness of social networking. For the first time, candidates connected with supporters and raised millions of dollars, sometimes ten dollars at the time.
Since many things can be found on the "net," including all things literary, it seems authors should jump into networking. Sites may eventually connect more people to books than monthly magazines and the daily newspaper ever did. Now that I think about it, I should keep Twitter in mind. That's the place where the word count postings is limited to a few words. Authors could simply toss their titles around. They might post: "Buy my new book, Appalachian Jack Tales." The response might come back,"Don't you have a better title." If Kindle takes hold, it will be possible for a writer to publish a book and let the reader give it any title that appeals to them.

Social networking is difficult when you lead a busy life. However, technology has made it easier to stay connected. The first place I go when I want to know something is the internet. I've seen younger artist market their work successfully on Myspace, Facebook, Mylot, and other various sites that allow you to put up a picture and blog. With most things in life it's about who you know. So the more sites you can get on go for it. I plan on making an experiment out of online networking. Let's see where it will take me.
That's a great idea for a project. I saw a two different groups featured on national television because they had gotten hundreds of thousands of hits on You Tube. If you had something to sell, that would be a dream come true. Let me know how the experiment goes.
I sure will :-)
