It's About Time...Warning

Lynn And, it is about time I get running again. Last week my computer crashed. I do mean the thing was invaded by a virus, despite all precautions (of having firewalls). Who knows how the dastardly culprit got though. Suddenly, a post came up saying that I could "click here in order to save my documents."
I did no clicking. Upon consulting my husband, who had never seen anything like that, he discovered a box that said "for $59.99 the situation can be avoided." A credit card number was also necessary.
That's when it is good to have someone that knows how to solve problems by calling MicroSoft. No, not me....my husband. It took about five hours of holding on, getting cut off, and calling back again (more thn once), to determine that my computer, indeed, would never be the same again. Everything on my hard drive was lost---manuscripts, letters, book ideas, blogging ideas---the works!
That fact alone nearly put me in bed. Instead, I spent two days going through flash drives being sure that my most important stuff was backed up. Let's say some, but not all. Many drafts, but not always the latest work. So, I had to get over a few things. OK, a lot of things and do what my son describes as "soldier on."
Part of the "soldiering" included having IBM install a new operating system, Microsoft reinstalled my software. Alas, the computer still want back to the factory. Despite all the agony on my part and the time my husband put in, IBM came through with checking out how things were functioning.
There was one good thing. We did not give our credit card number. There is something moving through firewalls that not only crashes computers but steals credit information.
I feel much better now that I'm back online. However, I remain solidly convinced that computers have too much sway over business. We are almost to the point as writers, teachers, students, and business people that we cannot do without machines.
Lastly, I could have used the advice I give students who come to class sans their assignment and say, "Mrs. Salsi, my computer crashed." That's when I remind them that they should have backed up their material. I end with, "Then you could go to the computer center and complete your work."
Good thing it is summer and I waited for the return of the computer I feel connected to....a marriage of sorts one might say.

Mrs. Salsi you are absolutely right about the technology we can't live without. The
computer is a very important asset to everyday life. I mean that's how student's do the
majority of assignments now. In all four of my classes I have to be able to access a
computer due to tests and some classwork online. If not I would honestly fail. And
teachers definitely need computers. I can just imagine how you felt when you lost the
work you did. There are times I almost had a heart attack because I thought I lost 5 or 3
page papers. I know that's nothing compared to all your paperwork. Another thing is
that student's or just anyone tend to procrastinate and end up doing work at the last
minute. Then when the computer DOES crash they freak out. Well I have the perfect
remedy for that. Just do assignments ahead of time in that way if something was to
happen where work is lost, there is enough time to find the problem and fix it
. Then the issue of your computer crashing will be taken care of and work will get
turned in on time. If it was not for the technology in today life it would be extremely hard
for society especially since a lot are dependent upon it. I'm glad not all of your work
was destroyed. Thank God for the invention of the flash drive too right Mrs. Salsi?
I could not agree with this situation any more! Today I went to Apple due to a hardware malfunction on my Iphone. I went to the store to check and make sure the phone was still under warranty. The salesman scanned the product and never came up with any problems, therefore, he was basically stating I was not telling the truth. Being a phone technician for DH Griffin and selling cellular devices and apple products at Best Buy, I am trained to understand almost every technical problem that could come with the device. I felt like I was being stereotyped as the everyday customer who asks for service due to their lack of knowledge with the product. I abruptly informed him of my past experience in the cellular device field and his attitude suddenly took a drastic change with me. Honestly, I gave him some knowledge that he didn't even know about the Iphone. So after the snear remarks and redundent questions he finally swapped me out for a new phone. Previously, I had made a back-up of all my information on my laptop straight to Itunes. Now when you swap out cell phones it's always a good idea to copy your contacts from the phones storage to the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card. The iphone doesn't carry the option of switching your contacts, on the other hand, it does allow you to synchronize or rip the information to the Itunes library. Finnaly, I get home and find out the information that was saved on my SIM card was missing. I then synchronized my "back-up" information only to figure out that alot of personal information was still on my old phone. This situation is a prime example showing the world that computers have the capability to store much of our life information. When I concluded all my information was lost I felt a sense of being lost myself. It is pivotal to back up any and all personal information whether it's on a cell phone or a computer. I would also recommend looking into a 250-500 GB external hard drive, which all information should be left on in case of a system crash.
